Triple Cheese Sourdough Grilled (Printable)

Layers of sharp cheddar, provolone, and mozzarella melt between golden sourdough slices for the ultimate comfort classic.

# What You’ll Need:

→ Bread & Cheese

01 - 4 slices thick sourdough bread
02 - 2 slices sharp cheddar cheese
03 - 2 slices provolone cheese
04 - 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

→ Spreads & Fats

05 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
06 - 1 tablespoon mayonnaise

# How-To Steps:

01 - Lay out all sourdough slices. Spread softened butter evenly on one side of each slice. If using mayonnaise for extra crispiness, spread a thin layer on the opposite side.
02 - Place two bread slices buttered side down on your work surface. Layer each with one slice cheddar, one slice provolone, and half the shredded mozzarella. Top with remaining bread slices, buttered side up.
03 - Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Place sandwiches in the pan and cook for 3-5 minutes per side, pressing gently with a spatula. Flip carefully when golden brown. Cook until cheese is completely melted and bread is crispy on both sides.
04 - Transfer sandwiches to a cutting board. Let rest for 1 minute to allow cheese to set slightly. Cut diagonally and serve immediately while hot.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • The combination of three cheeses creates layers of flavor that single cheese sandwiches just cannot match
  • Thick sourdough develops an incredible crunch while staying soft inside
02 -
  • Medium low heat is non negotiable, high heat burns the bread before the cheese melts
  • Letting the sandwiches rest for one minute before cutting prevents the cheese from escaping
03 -
  • Shred your own mozzarella instead of buying pre shredded for better melting
  • If the cheese is not melting, cover the pan with a lid for 30 seconds to trap heat
